ASSESSMENT OF EFFECT OF FLOODING AND FLOOD RISK REDUCTION STRATEGIES IN URBAN CENTRES
Abstract
The paper reviews the effects of flooding and flood risks strategies in urban areas. Data was collected through literature review and governmental agencies Adsema in Adamawa state. The study concludes that Flooding inflicts many losses to a country in terms of lost lives, destroyed properties, as well as health hazards brought about by the floods. The impact is great on populations and infrastructure due to the encroachment of urban facilities on floodplain, poor enforcement of physical planning regulations with respect to flood plain management and waterway planning. The study emphasized that Physical planning measures for coping flood effects should be taken before the unpleasant phenomenon strikes as most of the actions of physical planners during disasters, centered on the coordination of relief and engineering efforts of other organization such as (ADSEMA) for essential monitoring, which mostly a short term measures.
