Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) and its Relevance in National Economy: A Study of the National Directorate of Employment in Edo State

Abstract

This study explore the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) and its relevance in national economy; studying the National Directorate of Employment in Edo State. The study population comprised all employees of the National Directorate of Employment, Edo State. The sample population is 80.. Extensive review of related literatures was conducted to carry out the study. Responses were obtained using a structured questionnaire. The research questions underwent testing at the 0.05 significance level utilizing the one sample t-test. The study found that a significant relationship exists between NAPEP and enhanced living conditions in the State; a significant relationship exists between NAPEP and enhanced entrepreneurship activities in the state; but there were drawbacks in the implementation of the scheme in the state. But that the program didn’t result in the eradication of poverty in the state, despite the fact that it contributed to the enhancement of the living conditions of the people directly and indirectly. The study concluded that the issues that are of great concern to many people are: With concerted efforts to reduce poverty in the state, why is poverty increasing? What is the impact of rising poverty rates on the state's economy and the nation as a whole? And so on. The study among others recommended that the government needs to ensure its agenda is fully informed by the state, to ensure that all citizens are drawn into it. This is aimed at helping the country achieve its goal of reducing state-level poverty, one of the goals of the 2015 Millennium Development Goals Strategy.
