Measurement Scales in Human and Social Sciences: Nature, Procedure for Development and Validation
Abstract
This work examined the nature of measurement scales, the levels of measurement and the procedure for the development and validation of measurement scales in human and social sciences specifically in the education system. The use of valid and reliable measurement scales in the collection of data in the research process ensure the credibility of research findings. Many researchers collect data from population under study with the use of unvalidated and unreliable research instruments, this affects the usability and applicability of the findings in solving numerous problems confronting the education system in Nigeria. Many other researchers are unaware of the procedure and technicality involved in the development and validation of measurement scales. Through literature review it was established that carefully developed and validated measurement scales ensure objectivity and fairness in data collection, thereby reduce to the barest minimum biasness in testing on one hand and ensure effective generalization and application of findings in the research process. It was recommended that students and by extension researchers within the university system and beyond should be adequately trained on the process for the development and validation of measurement scales.
