An Assessment of Monitoring and Evaluation Processes in the Construction Industry in Bauchi State, Nigeria
Abstract
The study aimed to assess monitoring and evaluation processes in the construction industry in Bauchi State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to identify the processes involved in the monitoring and evaluation of projects, assess the level of compliance with the identified processes, and determine the significance of monitoring and evaluation in the construction industry. To obtain a general overview of the subject matter, a total of 40 structured questionnaires were administered to various professionals to assess the monitoring and evaluation processes, of which 32 were successfully retrieved. The data collected were analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and regression analysis as statistical tools. Based on the analysis of the respondents, completion and finishing points, daily inspection reports containing details of construction, initiation, monitoring and control systems, progress reports, planning, designing, and observation were identified as the most frequent processes of monitoring and evaluation in the construction industry. The empirical findings from the regression model and ANOVA test revealed that the monitoring and evaluation process has a positive impact on the construction industry, since the p-value is 0.019, which is less than the 5% (0.05) level of significance. This means that the variable (monitoring and evaluation process) has a positive impact on the construction industry. The regression model coefficient (Y = 20.960 + 0.360X₁) of the predictor (monitoring and evaluation process) and the dependent variable (construction industry) also indicates that the monitoring and evaluation process has a positive influence on the construction industry. The study concludes that the reason monitoring and evaluation is not achieving its desired results is due to inexperience within the management team.
