Abstract

This study investigated the influence of social media addiction on the academic achievement of Business Education students in Colleges of Education in Southwest Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population comprised Business Education students in Colleges of Education in Southwest Nigeria, while a sample of 638 students was selected using a multistage sampling procedure. Data were collected using the Social Media Addiction Questionnaire (SMAQ) and an Academic Achievement Test (AAT). The instruments were validated by experts, while reliability was established using Cronbach's alpha. Mean, and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, whereas Multiple Linear Regression were used to test the hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that Business Education students had a moderate level of academic achievement (Mean = 62.84, SD = 15.72) and a low level of social media addiction (Grand Mean = 2.47). Social media addiction had a negative but non-significant relationship with academic achievement (r = –.046, p > .05. Gender also had no significant moderating influence on the relationship between social media addiction academic achievement. The study concluded that social media addiction did not significantly predict the academic achievement of Business Education students. It was recommended that Colleges of Education should promote responsible social media use while strengthening other factors that enhance students' academic achievement.
