Abstract

The comparative analysis of extracts from leaves stem-bark and roots of Rosewood (Pterocarpus erinaceus) from Jalingo – Taraba State was carried out to ascertain the presence and the concentration of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, saponins alkaloid and others, and also, to determine which parts of the plant has the highest values of bioactive compounds. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was used to identify and quantify specific compounds.  The phytochemical constituents were presented in (mg/100g). The results show that flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, saponins and phenols are highly present in the leaves (+++), while alkaloids, saponins, and phenols are highly present in the stem bark. Alkaloids, terpenoids, tannins and phenols are present in the roots (++), steroids, and terpenoids are slightly present in leaves and stembark(+). The quantitative analysis shows that the leaves have the highest constituents of saponins, followed by the roots and stembark (29.36±0.03a, 26.96±0.03b and 26.72±0.02c) respectively. Alkaloids are higher in the stem bark, leaves and roots(24.40±0.03a, 18.76±0.02c and 8.54±0.03a) respectively. Phenols (12.13±0.03a, 11.17±0.03b and 9.85±0.02c) respectively. The preliminary findings of this study revealed that P. erinaceus leaves, stem-bark and roots could be a potential source of natural remedies that could have great essence as therapeutic agents. This research can be a source of information for traditional medicine practitioners, although, further research on the isolation and characterization of the active compounds and the mechanism of action of the active compounds should be carried out.
