Abstract

This study investigates the performance of Dynamic Voltage Restorers (DVRs) and Solid-State Fault Current Limiters (SSFCLs) through simulations, addressing the problem of voltage sags and interruptions in power systems that can disrupt power quality and cause significant operational issues, particularly in environments with sensitive equipment. The research aims to develop simulation models for voltage disturbances and assess the impact of advanced mitigation techniques on power quality and distribution network reliability. Using MATLAB/Simulink, key parameters such as line voltage, current, and load voltage were simulated under conditions including a 115V voltage sag (0.02 to 0.04 seconds) and a 0V interruption (0.06 to 0.08 seconds). The findings indicate that the DVR effectively compensates for voltage sags and interruptions, maintaining a stable load voltage of 230V throughout disturbances. The DVR’s ability to inject compensating voltage makes it ideal for sensitive applications, such as data centers and hospitals, where consistent voltage is critical. In contrast, the SSFCL allows load voltage to follow line voltage disturbances but limits line current during faults, protecting network components from overcurrent. The SSFCL's current-limiting feature effectively prevents damage to infrastructure but does not address voltage instability, making it more suited for industrial settings where fault protection is a priority. Both devices improve system stability and power quality, but cater to different operational needs. The DVR is recommended for environments requiring voltage stability, while the SSFCL is best suited for power distribution networks focused on current protection. Further research into hybrid systems integrating both devices could offer enhanced protection and power quality management for modern distribution networks.
