Assessing Accessibility to Educational Facilities in Yola South Local Government Area, Adamawa State
A Spatial and Socioeconomic Perspective
Abstract
This study evaluates the accessibility of educational facilities in Yola South, Adamawa State, Nigeria, with a focus on primary and secondary schools. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both primary data from a field survey and secondary data from official records. Data collection involved a structured questionnaire administered to 145 participants from primary and secondary schools, including teachers, principals, and head teachers, to assess the accessibility to key facilities such as classrooms, libraries, toilets, staff rooms, and electricity supply. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software was used for spatial analysis to determine the accessibility to educational facilities across the study area. A reconnaissance survey was first conducted to map out the study area, followed by the collection of spatial data using satellite imagery and GPS coordinates. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and GIS tools, including buffering and hotspot analysis, to identify areas with limited access to educational resources. The results highlight significant disparities in the accessibility of educational facilities between different wards in the region, with implications for educational planning and policy. The study calls for a more strategic approach to improving access to educational opportunities.
