The Role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Mitigating Environmental Degradation in Nigeria
A Review
Abstract
This research paper explores the pivotal role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in addressing environmental degradation in Nigeria. As the country grapples with significant ecological challenges, including deforestation, pollution, and climate change, ICT emerges as a vital tool for enhancing environmental management and sustainability. The study examines various ICT applications, such as data management systems, remote sensing, and mobile platforms, which facilitate real-time monitoring of environmental conditions and promote community engagement in conservation efforts. By analyzing case studies and empirical data, the paper highlights successful ICT initiatives that have led to improved resource management, increased public awareness, and enhanced policy implementation. Furthermore, the research discusses the barriers to ICT adoption in environmental contexts, including infrastructural deficiencies and lack of digital literacy. The findings underscore the necessity for strategic investments in ICT infrastructure and capacity building to leverage technology effectively in combating environmental degradation. Ultimately, this paper advocates for a multi-stakeholder approach to integrate ICT into Nigeria's environmental policies, aiming to foster sustainable development and resilience against ecological threats
