Abstract

The complex interplay between the Church and the state raises questions about the role of clergy in public life, particularly in societies marked by corruption, inequality, and human rights abuses. Given these challenges, it is essential to revisit the norms governing clerical involvement in politics. This study examines the involvement of Catholic clergy in politics, focusing on the permissions and restrictions under Canon law. It analyzes canons 285 §3 and 287, exploring whether clerics can hold public offices, run for elective positions, or assume legislative, juridical, and executive roles. The paper interprets the legislation, makes inferences, and draws conclusions on the discussion, aiming to clarify the conditions under which Catholic clergy can legally engage in public offices.
